Friends and Neighbors

I’m excited to share with you some of the recent developments and significant wins that my team and I have been championing in Court.

First, I am pleased to report that, following extensive advocacy efforts, we have achieved a salary raise for 911 Dispatchers and implemented other initiatives to enhance the quality of service they deliver to the community. These professionals play a crucial role in ensuring public safety, and it was essential for us to prioritize their ability to respond when you need assistance the most.

Regarding the new FY2025 County budget that was finalized on September 10th, I’m pleased to report that I fought for and secured an additional 41 deputy sheriffs and 12 deputy constables in this new budget. Since becoming a County Commissioner, I have consistently spearheaded efforts to increase law enforcement resources, and in the two years that I’ve been in office, 136 new law enforcement officers have been added! This is a historic and unprecedented investment into public safety by our County. I will continue to ensure that our local authorities have the necessary support to keep our communities safe and secure.

Every budget is going to be a process that ultimately ends in compromise. All in all, this is not the budget that I would have written, but the positives outweighed the negatives, and budgets are dynamic documents. Even with the addition of law enforcement officers and other items, there is still a $160M top line reduction in this budget. I will continue to advocate for fiscal restraint, reducing our debt burden, preserving our AAA credit rating, and prioritizing essential, statutory services. Governments at all levels must be better stewards of your tax dollars!

I also stood firm in my decision to vote against VIA’s request for $100M in County Advanced Transportation District (ATD) funds for the ART Silver Line. I believe that VIA should improve its utilization rate and show the true demand for their services before spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to expand further. It is crucial to approach public transportation decisions with a comprehensive perspective, and I will continue to prioritize the best interests of our constituents.

By now, you’ve heard about the contract the County approved for voter registration efforts, despite the threats of a lawsuit from Attorney General Ken Paxton. We’ve also been receiving emails and calls from concerned residents who have received voter registration forms for people who do not and have never lived at their address, for family members who have been deceased for years, and other concerning situations. I’ve taken a strong stance against this item since we first voted on it in July 2024. My concern was and still is that the company that was awarded the contract (with no bids from other, similar organizations) is not non-partisan, this is not a function of county government and we should not use taxpayer dollars for this effort (it has never been done before!), and many more. I firmly believe in protecting the integrity of our democratic processes and will not waver in safeguarding the rights of voters. I’ve linked several articles below with more of my sentiments on this critical issue.

On a positive note, we recently partnered with conservative members of the Bexar Appraisal District to pass meaningful appraisal reform. The board approved granting a one-year reprieve or pass for taxpayers who successfully challenge their property taxes through the appeals process in the previous year. This is a victory for taxpayers and will reduce the burden on taxpayers moving forward since they won’t have to fight through the appeals process every year. I’ve attached my letter of support below, which was read into the record and referenced by the board.

As always, I’m committed to representing your best interests and will continue to work tirelessly for the betterment of Bexar County. It has been great to hear from neighbors across Precinct 3 weigh in on the issues that are important to them, please keep your comments and concerns coming our way – and we will ensure that we are proactive about sharing upcoming items on the Court agendas. Thank you for your continued support and trust.

Great breakfast meeting with some of the local Mayors! We set this breakfast as a roundtable meeting of the minds to discuss the needs of the citizens and how we can best serve those needs.

Thank you to the Mayors that joined us at Magnolia Pancake Haus for a thought-provoking conversation.

Mayor Rich Whitehead, Helotes

Mayor JR Trevino, Castle Hills

Congratulations on your grand opening and welcome to the community, Chick-fil-A at 1539 N Loop 1604 W!

We had another productive Military Transformation Task Force Meeting on August 19, 2024.

I recently visited with the morning and night shift of the 911 Dispatch team. I’m thankful my team and I were able to push for more resources for 911 Dispatch.

I presented at two budget town halls, where I had an opportunity to go over my budget priorities with the Northeast Neighborhood Alliance and other residents in Pct 3.

My top priorities for our community that I spoke on include:

  1. Improving public safety
  2. Infrastructure – roads, flood control, & parks
  3. Applying fiscal responsibility by:
    a) reducing the burden on tax payers
    b) reducing unnecessary or wasteful spending
    c) eliminating redundancies and improving efficiency of county gov’t services

We had great groups at both events, and I enjoyed connecting on these important issues.

Great event in August hosted by Americans For Prosperity to talk about public safety, the impacts of crime on our community, and the importance of investing our resources to combat criminal activity.

I want to give special thanks to our hosts, Jon Melendez of AFP and Pct 3 Constable Mark Vojvodich, who joined me in addressing these issues.

I had a great time as the guest speaker for the Asian American Alliance of San Antonio’s board meeting.

My team attended the Roadrunners Kickoff that we co-sponsored for UTSA – The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Emmitt Smith was the guest speaker, and he shared some great insights into the hard work and dedication that led to his success.

I’m looking forward to a great Roadrunner season! Birds up!!

This past 9/11 marks the 23rd anniversary of the tragic 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S.

We remember and honor those who lost their lives by participating in the 9/11 Memorial Climb in the early a.m. After the climb, I was able to hang a tribute to fallen firefighter and hero, Jeffrey Walz.

May we never forget those who lost their lives, those who stepped up to serve, and the countless sacrifices made in the days, months and years after the attacks.

Commissioners Court

How I View Court items

Every Commissioners Court meeting provides me an opportunity to weigh in on a variety of issues that are important to Precinct 3. Sometimes these issues are topics that I fundamentally oppose, such as legacy funding for programs that have received County funding year over year but have failed to show a return on investment. I also scour the agendas for programs that are inefficient or should be funded by means other than tax dollars. I invite all of you to read the Commissioners Court agendas and let me know if there are items that you support or have concerns with so that I can ensure that we take your points into consideration.

About Commissioners Court

Commissioners Court is on Tuesdays, generally twice a month at the Double Height Courtroom in the historic Bexar County Courthouse located at 100 Dolorosa. You can see a calendar of when we will meet or hold work sessions here: Work Session Calendar

Commissioners Court meetings begin at 9am and are open to the public. If you are unable to make it to the meeting, you can watch it online at Commissioners Court Live Broadcast or on the local public access channel. I encourage all of you to tune in or come to Court to see your County government in action.

I will use this part of the newsletter to continue highlighting Commissioners Court wins and will provide you updates on important issues coming before us. You can also see current Court agendas here: Court Agenda

Again, if you ever see an item on a Commissioners Court agenda that you have concerns about, please contact my office and let me know.

As you will see, the overwhelming majority of items on our agendas are not political and are items that the County has to address due to state statutes, or items that are related to important capital improvements across the county. When an item comes up that I believe is wasteful spending of your tax dollars or is contrary to our conservative values, I will challenge it. You can count on me to raise my concerns, argue valid and reasonable points, garner the support of my colleagues, and, if unsuccessful, vote “No”.
